Product Description

There have been many books written on oriental art, both specialized and general. Most of these have stressed the historical aspect, paying little attention to the details of individual pieces and concentrating mainly on the great masterpieces and antiquities of the early schools.

Most collectors, however interested, will very rarely come across any of these pieces, simply because the majority are in museums, and should such objects come on to the open market they will cost a considerable amount, normally far more than the ordinary collector can afford to pay. Because of this, many connoisseurs and collectors have been frustrated by the lack of publications that tell them about objects that they personally have. Most books illustrate only the very best masterpieces in their particular field. The same pieces seem to be illustrated in the book and the collector finds that he is unable to add? pen every to his knowledge about the objects he has in his collection.

I have deliberately written this book in a way that I hope will clarify many of the questions that collectors continually find themselves facing, and have tried to illustrate it, not with great masterpieces, but with objects that the ordinary collector will find that he can obtain, and may even, perhaps, have in his possession. I have, therefore, not included illustrations of major works. The collector, I am sure, will be able to find numerous books where they are illustrated. I have concentrated on the lesser antiquities and objects of the later periods. I have also included information that, to my knowledge, is not generally available to the collector.

I have tried to write this so that the information will be easily available and can be quickly compared with the photographs and line drawings.

The book is not intended as a great scholarly work. I am sure there are many others who can do this far better than I-but it is intended for the collector who simply wants to enlarge his knowledge of oriental art, and help him to understand better the objects that he may have in his possession, and also for the outsider' who may be interested but has yet to take the 'plunge' may.
