Product Description

Product Description

J.R.D. Tata is one of the best-known Indians of our time. Yet, despite his enormous contribution to Indian aviation and industry, and the many thousands of words written about him, little is known of the man, the tycoon, the aviation expert, and the philanthropist behind the public face. Written with J.R.D.'s cooperation, this superb biography is based on years of observation, several interviews, and unrestricted access to J.R.D.'s private and official papers. R.M. Lala's narration of the J.R.D. story, from his birth to 1991, year in which he stepped down from the Chairmanship of Tata Sons, is divided into four parts: Part I deals with the early years, the from J.R.D.'s birth in France in 1904 to his accession to the Chairmanship of Tatas India's largest industrial conglomerate, at the age of thirty-four; Part II looks at his forty-six years in Indian aviation (the lasting passion of J.R.D.'s life) which led to the initiation of the Indian aviation industry and its development into one of India's success stories; Part III illuminates his half-century-long stint as the outstanding personality of Indian industry; and Part IV unearths hitherto unknówn details about the private man and the public figure, including glimpses of his long friendships with people such as Jawaharlal Nehru, Mahatma Gandhi, Indira Gandhi and his association with celebrities in India and abroad With sympathetic insight and intimate details, R.M. Lala has written an unforgettable portrait of one of the greatest Indians of the twentieth century.

This is the biography of J.R.D. Tata, the patriarch of the biggest industrial house in India, is comparable in stature to Forbes, Rockefeller, or Du Pont. He pioneered aviation in India and presided over the development of the country's steel, cement, truck, and vegetable oils industry.
